A skier passed away after hitting a tree at Keystone Resort in Colorado

Snowboarders head down the Schoolmarm run on opening day at Keystone October 28, 2022. Keystone is offering two open trails accessed from the River Run Gondola at the base to the top of Dercum Mountain where skiers and snowboarders then ski and ride down to mid-mountain and catch the Montezuma Express lift back up the mountain. Skiers and snowboarders can catch a ride down to the base anytime via the River Run Gondola. Riders can also enjoy a hike-to terrain park just off of both the gondola and Montezuma Express. A man who was 58 years old died after crashing into a tree at Keystone Resort on Thursday morning, according to the Summit County Sheriff’s Office.

The man hit a tree while skiing on the Flying Dutchman trail on Dercum Mountain at around 9:45 a.m., the sheriff’s office said in a news release Friday. He died at the scene.

The man was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and no other skiers or snowboarders were involved, though another skier witnessed the crash, sheriff’s officials said. The man has not yet been identified.

“Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by the tragic loss of life at Keystone Ski Resort,” Sheriff Jaime FitzSimons said in a statement. “We are actively investigating the incident and working closely with resort officials to ensure the safety of all visitors to our community’s beloved slopes.”

This is the third skiing- or snowboarding-related death reported at Colorado ski resorts in the last two weeks.

A 14-year-old Monument boy died after apparently crashing into a tree at Keystone and a 35-year-old Denver man died in a skiing accident at Vail Mountain, both on March 2.
