The Indianapolis reporter who became widely known for an awkward conversation with the Indiana Fever star Caitlin Clark has been suspended because of the situation.

After Clark was chosen as the number one overall pick in the WNBA Draft, she attended a press event in Indianapolis. During the event, IndyStar reporter Gregg Doyel awkwardly made a heart gesture with his hands — the same gesture Clark typically does towards her family at games. When Clark explained that it was a personal thing with her family, Doyel said, “Start doing it to me and we’ll get along just fine.”

Doyel faced a lot of criticism online. In response, he wrote a column explaining his stance and apologizing to Clark.

Unfortunately, that apology didn’t go over well when users discovered his history of similarly questionable comments toward female athletes.

According to sportswriter Bob Kravitz, Doyel has been suspended by IndyStar. Sources told Kravitz that Doyel is expected to return from his suspension Monday. He has not published anything on IndyStar since April 29.

Additionally, Doyel will not attend any Fever games this season. Instead, he’ll write columns after watching the team from home.

Kravitz reached out to Doyel on Tuesday, but he would not address the issue.
