General Motors published its 2023 Sustainability Report, demonstrating the company’s dedication to creating a fair future without emissions and working towards its carbon-neutral objective. The report highlights General Motors’s efforts to accelerate the adoption of electric vehicles, form strategic partnerships to improve supply chain sustainability, and promote the development of a future-ready grid powered by renewable energy.

GM is working hard to decrease greenhouse gas emissions in pursuit of a zero-emissions future. The report gives detailed insights into GM’s efforts across key areas of focus, including environmental protection, innovation, social responsibility and governance.

Sustainability is not only good policy but also good for business — beneficial for the company, for employees, and for attracting and retaining the best people who will assist us in achieving our vision,” said GM Chair and CEO Mary Barra. “We’ve made significant progress through our investments and innovations in electric and autonomous technology, and we intend to broaden our impact, particularly with numerous significant EV launches across various price ranges and segments this year.

Key points from the new report include:

  • Participating in the ZEROgrid Initiative with other industry leaders and the Rocky Mountain Institute to drive progress towards a less carbon-intensive, more reliable, and affordable grid
  • Planning to incorporate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) into future General Motors EVs, while also enabling access to over 15,000 superchargers in 2024
  • Expanding GM’s dedication to the First Movers Coalition to include steel, aluminum, concrete, and cement
  • Providing $64 million in grants to nearly 400 U.S.-based nonprofits to help develop inclusive solutions to social problems

At GM, we are taking important steps toward supporting the transition to a more sustainable, zero-emissions future for everyone,” said Kristen Siemen, GM chief sustainability officer. “We continue to make progress integrating sustainability into our business from the initial design and selection of materials, through product development and manufacturing, to innovative solutions for end of life. While there’s more work to do, we are proud of our progress and are moving with purpose.
