Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema thinks that regulating the sale of hard drugs like cocaine and ecstasy is the only way to fight the drug trade.

“I think some drugs are dangerous and I also think it would be wise to reduce drug use. However, I also notice that the way we do it is not helping… we need to think about better ways to regulate drugs.” Halsema said.

She believes that the current methods of control haven't made a difference; the street price of cocaine has stayed the same.

“Isn’t it funny that we let criminals handle the drug trade and don't attempt to create a civilized market?” – the mayor of Amsterdam stated.

Halsema also mentioned that she might consider creating a regulated market for ecstasy, in addition to the one for cocaine.
