WPIAL boys tennis summary for April 4, 2024: Previous champions from Gateway compete in section finals

Adam Memije and Zidaan Hassan from Gateway, who won the WPIAL Class 3A doubles title last year, faced each other in the Section 1-3A singles finals on Thursday. Memije won with scores of 6-2, 6-4.

Memije and Hassan beat Franklin Regional teammates in the semifinals with clear victories. Memije won 6-0, 6-0 against Prem Nadasen, and Hassan won 6-1, 6-4 against Colin Stalnaker.

Stalnaker defeated Nadasen 6-0, 6-4 in the third-place match. The top four finishers qualify for the WPIAL tournament in Class 3A.

Section 2-3A – Advaita Sircar and Evan Kaufman from North Allegheny, the top two seeds, progressed to the section singles finals. Sircar won 6-0, 6-0 against Michael deVyver of Seneca Valley, and Kaufman won a tough match against Josh Kim of North Hills, with scores of 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 in the semifinals.

Section 3-3A – In the championship and third-place matches, Fox Chapel’s Will Siegel secured a section title by defeating Shady Side Academy’s Sai Chaudhry 6-3, 6-1. Chase Hartman from the Bulldogs won the third-place match by beating the Foxes’ Charlie Larsen 6-0, 6-2.

Section 4-3A – Second-seeded Ari Plutko from Upper St. Clair made a comeback after losing the first set to beat returning WPIAL finalist Devin Collier from Bethel Park in a three-set section final, with scores of 0-6, 6-2, 6-3. Ronan Gibbons from Upper St. Clair defeated Peters Township’s Avi Sharma in a three-set third-place match with scores of 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Section 1-2A – Landon Harclerode from Valley completed his run to a Section 1-2A championship with a 6-3, 6-4 victory over Aydan Gross from Mt. Pleasant in the finals. Gabe Nettleton from Indiana defeated Silas Morris from Greensburg Salem in the third-place match with scores of 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. The top three finishers qualify for the WPIAL tournament in Class 2A.

Section 2-3A – Jonah Jasek from South Park defeated Brendan Hallisey, the returning WPIAL Class 2A doubles champion from Chartiers Valley, with a convincing win in the section singles finals, with scores of 6-1, 6-1. Steven Duing from South Park rallied to beat Rylan Barr from Thomas Jefferson for third place, with scores of 1-6, 6-2, 6-1

Section 3-2A – Jack Gillespie, the top seed from Aquinas Academy, won the section finals in straight sets, defeating Justin Garvey from North Catholic, with scores of 6-2, 6-3. Hampton’s Vitaliy Pikalo secured a spot in the WPIAL field with a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Justin Kontul from North Catholic in the third-place match.

Section 4-2A – Severin Harmon, the returning WPIAL runner-up, scored a 6-1, 6-1 victory over Sewickley Academy teammate Finn Wentz in the section finals. Ben Crefeld from Blackhawk defeated Zack Masters from Beaver for third place, with scores of 7-5, 6-1

Section 5-2A – John Rohrkaste, the top seed from Montour, defeated Chris Zhu from Winchester Thurston for the section singles crown with scores of 6-2, 6-0. Chase Merkel from Quaker Valley defeated Nikou Nourbakhsh from Winchester Thurston in the third-place match with scores of 6-2, 6-4.
