At least one driver was transported to a nearby hospital for evaluation after an excavator slid off a trailer and landed on two cars on Wednesday afternoon in Unity.

No serious injuries were reported in the accident that occurred just after 4:30 p.m. at Route 981 and Monastery Drive.

The excavator seemed to have fallen while the trailer was turning from Route 981 to go east on Monastery, while the two cars were stationary on Monastery, facing west at the traffic signal of the intersection, as per Tom Schultheis, Unity Township emergency management coordinator.

The woman driving the car closest to Route 981 was taken to the hospital, according to Schultheis.

“She was able to get out of the passenger side where the window was,” he said.

Local towing services were sent to lift the excavator and clear the damaged vehicles, he said.

Further information was not immediately available.
