Michigan State Rep. Matt Maddock (R) was roasted online when a bus he claimed was filled with migrants was actually transporting Gonzaga’s men’s basketball team.

On Wednesday night, Maddock posted pictures of three buses at Detroit Metro Airport. Along with a picture of a plane that had just landed, Maddock somehow concluded that the plane had brought migrants who were then put on the buses.

“Happening right now. Three buses just loaded up with illegal invaders at Detroit Metro,” Maddock said. “Anyone have any idea where they’re headed with their police escort?”

This theory was quickly proven to be false. WXYZ Detroit reporter Maxwell White explained that the “illegal invaders” in question were actually the college basketball team traveling for the NCAA Tournament.

“Just to be clear, this was the Gonzaga basketball team,” White said. “Photos show Gonzaga getting on an Allegiant plane to Detroit for the Sweet 16, and Flight Radar shows a plane from GEG to DTW landed at 7:25 p.m., around the time this photo was posted.

“This is a wild tweet.”

Others were quick to criticize Maddock for the significant misinformation.

In response to the backlash, Maddock stood by his statement on Thursday morning.
