Ucluelet woman wins $18 million in Lotto Max jackpot

Sharon Fraser checked her PlayNow.com account while eating breakfast and immediately told her husband and son at the table

A retired Ucluelet couple have become the latest lottery winners in B.C. after hitting the $18 million Lotto Max jackpot on Feb. 23.

Sharon Fraser mentioned to the B.C. Lottery Corp. that while having breakfast recently with her husband and son, she remembered to check her PlayNow.com account, BCLC’s online lottery app, where she has a subscription.

“Every Saturday morning, I check the (Lotto Max) results,” she said while collecting her prize at BCLC’s Vancouver office on Tuesday.

“I thought it was a free play and said, ‘They’ve made a mistake.’ I called customer support and they verified everything.”

Fraser said when she shared the news with her children, “the kids were in disbelief at first.”

The couple aren’t rushing to make plans, though they plan to buy property and a new car. As an avid sailor, she also hopes to take some trips south on her sailboat.

“We don’t have to worry — we’re retirees,” said Fraser. “It’s also going to provide security for my children.”

B.C. players have collected $34 million in prizes on Lotto Max so far in 2024. The countrywide draw is held every Tuesday and Friday after the 7:30 p.m. deadline with jackpots escalating until it’s won.

Tickets can be purchased at lottery retailers across B.C. and at PlayNow.com. Anyone having issues with gambling can get more information at GameSense.com.
