The Six Best Bible Verses About Snow

Turns out there are tons of Bible verses about snow. And they’re full of wisdom about sin, forgiveness, being a good mother and how to shovel snow.

There are more than two dozen Bible verses that reference snow. And they’re actually all great. The Book of Job is full of them, as are the Psalms. But here are six of the best Bible verses about snow.

Job 9:29-31

If I am condemned,
Why then do I labor in vain?
If I wash myself with snow water,
And cleanse my hands with soap,
Yet You will plunge me into the pit,
And my own clothes will abhor me.

What’s weird is that this is exactly, word-for-word, what my husband muttered as he came in after shoveling snow for two hours this morning.

Psalm 51:6-7

Behold, You desire truth in the inward parts,
And in the hidden part You will make me to know wisdom.

Purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean;
Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

For context, David had spied Bathsheba bathing on the rooftop. Even though she was the wife of one of his senior advisors, he seduced her and impregnated her. And then he killed her husband Uriah to cover it all up. God sent the Prophet Nathan to David to confront him with his sin and this is part of the beautiful psalm he wrote after confessing his sin. If you’ve stopped pretending you’re not a sinner, it’s a great passage to read.

Proverbs 25: 11-13

A word fitly spoken is like apples of gold
In settings of silver.

Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold
Is a wise rebuker to an obedient ear.

Like the cold of snow in time of harvest
Is a faithful messenger to those who send him,
For he refreshes the soul of his masters.

Our complete societal inability to handle rebuke can’t be illustrated. Instead, here’s a picture of a faithful messenger in snow.

Proverbs 31:20-21

She extends her hand to the poor,
Yes, she reaches out her hands to the needy.

She is not afraid of snow for her household,
For all her household is clothed with scarlet.

The Proverbs 31 woman (like the Titus 2 women) can easily be misunderstood. But it does give us a great model of proper vocational service as wife, mother, community leader and runner of house and business. Go on with your bad selves, Proverbs 31 women.

Isaiah 1:18

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

One might say that this is one of the central teachings of Scripture. Which is probably why we all struggle with it so much.

Mark 9:2-4

Now after six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John, and led them up on a high mountain apart by themselves; and He was transfigured before them. His clothes became shining, exceedingly white, like snow, such as no launderer on earth can whiten them. And Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus.

My church just celebrated the Transfiguration of Jesus last week. It is marked in August in other traditions. It’s a celebration of the moment that Christ, in the company of Moses and Elijah, literally shined His glorious divine nature on Peter, James, and John, leaving them dazed and awestruck
