PARIS — French President Emmanuel Macron believes that France and its allies “could have prevented” the 1994 Rwanda genocide and “did not have the determination to do so.”
Macron’s office mentioned in a statement that the French president will share a video on social media on Sunday as Rwanda observes the 30th anniversary of the genocide.
In the video, Macron states that “France, which had the ability to halt the genocide with its Western and African allies, did not have the determination to do so.”
In 2021 during a visit to the central African country, Macron admitted France’s “responsibility” in the genocide that resulted in over 800,000 deaths, primarily of ethnic Tutsis and the Hutus who attempted to protect them.
