More than 500 flights were unable to depart or arrived late on Tuesday at Denver International Airport due to strong winds causing travel issues.
By 8 a.m., 520 flights had experienced delays and 33 had been canceled due to high winds, as reported by flight tracking data from FlightAware. Over half of the delays are for inbound flights delayed at their starting point for an average of 1 hour and 50 minutes. FlightAware has not yet provided the average length of outbound or in-air delays.
Between 5 a.m. and 9 a.m. on Tuesday, 28 flights were delayed and three were canceled, as indicated by live flight tracking from FlightAware’s MiseryMap.SkyWest
Airlines such as Southwest, United, SkyWest, CommuteAir, Delta, Lufthansa, Frontier, JetBlue, American, and Alaska Airlines have had delays or cancellations.
New regional airline SkyWest had the most canceled flights with 16 cancellations and 20 delays, while Southwest had the highest number of delays by 8 a.m. on Tuesday, with 383 flights delayed and eight canceled. United delayed 65 flights and canceled five by Tuesday morning.
Yesterday, more than 1,100 flights were delayed or canceled at DIA due to high winds reaching up to 45 mph. Although winds eased in much of the state on Tuesday, gusts as high as 47 mph are expected at DIA, according to the National Weather Service. On Wednesday, gusts at the airport may decrease to 28 mph.
