Marjorie Taylor Greene Defends Her Motion to Remove Speaker, Claims She Doesn’t Want to Cause Disorder in the House

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said the “clock has started” after filing a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) said the “clock has started” after filing a motion to vacate House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA).

Speaking to reporters after filing her motion, Greene criticized Johnson for his support of a $1.2 trillion spending package that passed the House on Friday. Johnson highlighted conservative policy wins in the bill, including proposed cuts to the IRS, but many Republican House members criticized the bill as a failure, including Greene.

She said on Friday Republicans promised with their majority to bring back “regular order” to the House.

“Speaker Johnson has betrayed that by passing three [continuing resolutions] and then forcing us to vote on a two-part omnibus, the second one being today. He also only gave us, I mean, I don’t even know, we had one day basically to read 1,000 pages, breaking the 72-hour rule,” she said. “This is a betrayal of the American people. This is a betrayal of Republican voters. And the bill that we were forced to vote on, forced Republicans to still choose between funding to pay our soldiers and in doing so, funding late term abortion. This bill was basically a dream and a wishlist for Democrats and for the White House, it was completely led by Chuck Schumer, not our Republican Speaker of the House, not our conference. And we weren’t even allowed amendments to the floor.”

Greene said her motion to vacate is a “warning and a pink slip,” explaining there is no time frame for a vote because she does not want a repeat of the lengthy process to oust Kevin McCarthy. She made clear, however, that she thinks it’s time for Johnson to go.

“I am saying the clock has started, it’s time for our conference to choose a new speaker,” she said.

Greene claimed she does not want to throw her conference into “chaos.”

“I filed the motion to vacate today, but it’s more of a warning and a pink slip,” she said. “I respect our conference. I paid all my dues to my conference. I’m a  member in good standing and I do not wish to inflict pain on our conference and to throw — throw the House in chaos, but this is basically a warning and it’s time for us to go through the process, take our time and find a new Speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans and our Republican majority instead of standing with with the Democrats.”
