Skiers report that a situation in the Colorado backcountry turned unpleasant recently when a group caused an avalanche that carried a member of another group through a couloir at Quandary Peak.
A resident of Avon named Trevor Carlson mentioned that on the morning of April 21, he and his three companions were skiing individually to check the conditions through the couloir on the 14,000-foot peak when a group of three descended into the couloir from above all together.
Carlson mentioned that he and his friends were approximately one-third of the way down the couloir when the third skier in the other group set off an avalanche that swept his friend off his feet, over rocks, and an estimated 1,000 feet to the bottom of the couloir, where he was partially buried. While his group hurried to rescue their friend, he stated that the other group departed without offering assistance or apologizing.
“I’m extremely let down by the behavior of individuals who assert to be locals and backcountry enthusiasts,” Carlson stated on Tuesday, April 23, during a phone interview.
