Supporters of Trump who want to remove a leader in Wisconsin say they have gathered enough signatures to push for a recall

MADISON, Wis. — Backers of an effort to oust Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos from office over his opposition to former President Donald Trump announced Sunday that they’ve collected enough signatures to force a recall vote.

MADISON, Wis. — Supporters of an attempt to remove Wisconsin Republican Assembly Speaker Robin Vos from his position due to his opposition to former President Donald Trump declared on Sunday that they have amassed adequate signatures to demand a recall vote.

Supporters of the effort to recall plan to submit the signatures on Monday to the Wisconsin Elections Commission, claiming they have more than the required 6,850 signatures from voters in Vos’ district in southeast Wisconsin.

“With more than 10,000 signatures on our recall petition, they’ve made it clear: they want a change and new representation,” stated Matt Snorek, who initiated the campaign in January.

Vos has rejected the recall as a waste of time and resources, which he restated in a statement on Sunday. He questioned the group’s methods and the legitimacy of the signatures, pledging that a team he put together would “review each individual signature.”

The effort to recall him underscores ongoing dissatisfaction among Trump’s supporters in battleground Wisconsin regarding his defeat in the 2020 election and how Vos handled it. This includes Vos' refusal to support attempts from Trump and his supporters to overturn Biden’s victory and his decision not to proceed with impeaching Wisconsin’s top elections official.

Trump narrowly won Wisconsin in 2016 but lost to President Joe Biden by a similar margin of about 21,000 votes in 2020. The result has withstood two partial recounts, numerous lawsuits, an independent audit, and a review by a conservative law firm.

The announcement of the recall campaign comes after the Wisconsin Supreme Court declined on Friday to address Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ request to clarify if Wisconsin’s new legislative district maps apply to elections before November, leaving uncertainty about whether signatures for the recall effort should be collected in Vos’ new district.

Snorek mentioned on Sunday that they interpreted the court’s decision as an indication that their efforts in Vos’ current district were correct.

First elected in 2004, Vos is the longest-serving Assembly speaker in state history, holding the post since 2013.
