Some House Democrats expressed joy, chanted, “Ukraine, Ukraine!” and displayed small Ukrainian flags on the House floor after passage the aid bill, causing the Chair to bang the gavel and remind them that “House decorum” precluded them from doing so.
House Speaker Mike Johnson took the podium at one point, banging the gavel and announcing, “The House will be in order! It is a violation of decorum to wave flags on the floor of the House. The chair said it, the speaker’s repeated it, please put the flags down.”
MSNBC’s Alex Witt reported that one house member shouted an expletive into the microphone about the flag situation.
Witt began, “101 Republicans, 210 Democrats voted in favor. There was one Republican from Pennsylvania, Rep. Dan Mazer, who voted ‘present.’ All Democrats in the House there, on the floor there, voted in favor of Ukraine aid.” She continued:
This is notable. We are getting a readout that Speaker Johnson, Leader Scalise, Whip Emmer, they all voted for Ukraine aid. The fourth member of GOP leadership, conference chair Elise Stefanik, voted against. So, again, 3 to 1 in favor of Ukraine aid and voting for the passage of that bill, all but Stefanik who voted against that. And again, the color has been on the floor that we saw a couple of dozen Democrats there during the vote on the floor, there on the left of the screen, waving small Ukrainian flags there on the floor.
The chair then had to remind them, though, it’s a violation of decorum to wave flags on that floor. After passage, the Democrats erupted in cheers and some, one person, that being Rep. Anna Paulina Luna went to the microphone to say, “Put those —expletive — flags away.”
