The publisher of former Prime Minister Liz Truss’ new memoir will remove a wrongly attributed quote about financial control to Jewish financier Mayer Amschel Rothschild, the founder of the Rothschild banking dynasty.

In her new book Ten Years To Save The West, Truss quotes Rothschild as having said: “Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws.” There are no records that support this attribution.

Writer Dorian Lynskey first spotted the quote and explained that the first misattribution of it dates back to 1935 in Gertrude Coogan’s book Money Creators. Coogan, Lynskey said, was an antisemitic author obsessed with Rothschild conspiracy theories.

Lynskey’s discovery prompted the Board of Deputies of British Jews to write to Biteback Publishing, leading to an apology from the publisher and a commitment to remove the quote from future print editions and the e-book.

Speaking to the Evening Standard, spokesperson for Truss blamed the internet and said: “Liz came across the quote and thought it a useful way of illustrating a point about the Bank of England. Numerous online sources have stated that it was attributed to Rothschild, so she simply attributed it thus. Clearly nothing more was meant of it.”
