Car goes through red light, collides with light rail train in downtown Denver

RTD Light Rail trains arrive and depart from Lincoln Station, an RTD Light Rail station in Lone Tree, Colorado on March 18, 2024. Colorado leaders are trying to compel cities to allow high-density development but opposition based on “local control” threatens to defeat the governor and lawmakers’ latest proposal, even though many cities, including Lone Tree, have already allowed some transit-friendly development. Several light rail lines of the Regional Transportation District were briefly shut down on Wednesday after a train collided with a car that had gone through a red light in downtown Denver.

Several light rail lines of the Regional Transportation District were temporarily closed on Wednesday after a train struck a car that ran a red light in downtown Denver’s Central Business District.

The collision occurred at about 1 p.m. at the intersection of Stout and 15th streets in Denver, according to RTD spokesperson Tina Jaquez. No light rail passengers or operators were harmed in the collision.

RTD’s D and H lines had delays but these were resolved by around 2:30 p.m., once the collision was cleared from the tracks, Jaquez mentioned.

The car's driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries, said Siena Riley, a spokesperson for the Denver Police Department. The driver went through a red light and was struck by the train.
