The father of a 22-month-old Brighton girl who died after consuming 10 times the deadly amount of fentanyl has been given a 40-year prison sentence on Thursday.
Alonzo Ray Montoya, 33, was found guilty in the death of his daughter, Aviyana Montoya, by an Adams County jury in January.
Aviyana was found unresponsive in her crib on the afternoon of Jan. 2, 2022, nearly 14 hours after she was placed there by her parents, according to police reports.
Montoya was accused of operating a drug-dealing operation from their home, with surveillance video showing drugs being sold and used before, during and after Aviyana’s death, according to the 17th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.
Surveillance videos from the home showed Aviyana playing on the bed in the master bedroom where people were using drugs, according to the district attorney’s office.
Aviyana’s mother, 32-year-old Nicole Danielle Casias, is also charged with child abuse resulting in death, child abuse by knowing exposure to controlled substance manufacturing, child abuse resulting in no injury and racketeering. Her trial is scheduled to begin July 12.
