Carson Shuglie hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning to give Hempfield the lead in a 6-4 win over Central Catholic in Section 2-6A baseball on Wednesday.
Quinn Wilkins got two RBIs with a double for the Spartans (6-0, 2-0). Landon Greene brought in two runs for the Vikings (3-3, 0-2). Adam Hess was the winning pitcher for Hempfield.
Ellwood City defeats Quaker Valley 5-3 – Ryan Widmaier hit a double and brought in two runs, while Isaiah Lutz and Nathan Kennedy each brought in a run as Ellwood City (3-2, 1-2) defeated Quaker Valley (1-4, 0-3) in Section 1-3A. Todd Kagle hit a double and brought in two runs for the Quakers. Will Nardone got the win and Owen Andrews got the save for the Wolverines.
Freeport wins against Deer Lakes 5-4 – Michael Hanz hit a game-tying two-run double, Ryan Claypool followed with a go-ahead RBI double, and Matt Corfield added an insurance run with an RBI double of his own as Freeport (1-3, 1-2) beat Deer Lakes (2-3, 0-3) in Section 3-3A. Ryan Cochran hit a solo home run for the Lancers.
Keystone Oaks beats Steel Valley 11-3 – Winning pitcher Jake LaPorte tripled and brought in three runs, and Vinny Kaplack doubled twice and ended with three RBIs as Keystone Oaks (1-3, 1-0) won in a Section 2-3A matchup. Logan Thomas and Garrett Cherpak each got two hits and an RBI for Steel Valley (1-3, 0-1).
Latrobe shuts out Laurel Highlands 10-0 – Winning pitcher Riley Smith allowed one hit and struck out four in six innings as Latrobe (4-1, 1-0) shut out Laurel Highlands (0-4, 0-1) in Section 2-4A. Cooper Basciano got a triple and two RBIs, Luke Nipar-Smith tripled and brought in a run, and Jacob Cramer brought in two runs for the Wildcats. Austin Wingard got the only hit for the Mustangs.
Mars wins 4-3 against West Allegheny – Jake Johnson hit the go-ahead two-run triple in the bottom of the sixth inning as Mars (3-0, 1-0) got a Section 3-5A win over West Allegheny (2-1, 0-1). Johnson and Hayden Reisinger each hit a double for the Fightin’ Planets. Will Gubba hit a double and brought in two runs for West A.
Mohawk wins 5-1 against Neshannock – Briar Crawford pitched 4 ⅔ innings without allowing a hit and had 10 strikeouts, while AJ Verdi brought in three runs for Mohawk (5-0, 4-0) in a Section 1-3A win. Jay Wrona hit a single and brought in a run for the Warriors. Dom Cubellis hit a triple and scored for Neshannock (1-4, 0-2).
Mt. Lebanon edges out Canon-McMillan 2-1 – Sawyer Klasnick hit a two-run triple and Jake Tinnemeyer also hit a triple as Mt. Lebanon (4-1, 1-0) narrowly beat Canon-McMillan (0-3, 0-1) in Section 2-6A. Ben Peterson and Kolton Smittle each hit a double for the Big Macs. Graham Keen struck out five in four innings for the Blue Devils.
North Catholic wins 5-0 against Hampton – Thomas Schafale pitched a complete-game one-hit shutout and struck out 10 to lead North Catholic (1-1, 1-0) to a Section 4-4A win. Schafale also hit a two-run home run. Blake Primrose hit a solo home run and hit a double for the Trojans. Sean Sullivan got the only hit for Hampton (2-1, 1-0).
Seneca Valley wins 11-1 against Allderdice – The Seneca Valley baseball team won against Allderdice with strong performances from Zach Tkatch, Creed Erdos, and Nick Parrotto.
Trinity defeated Connellsville with a score of 5-2. Trinity won a Section 2-5A game with Matthew Robaugh hitting a two-run home run and Mekhi Bouman driving in a run. J.R. Rieg got the win and Jackson Burt got the save for the Hillers.
In a close game, West Mifflin emerged victorious with a walk-off single by Jacob Cannon. West Mifflin secured a win over Elizabeth Forward with a walk-off single by Jacob Cannon.
Softball
Armstrong defeated Deer Lakes in a nonsection game with great pitching from Madison Baker and strong hitting from Natalie Zeigler. Burrell won against Steel Valley with a strong performance from Bella Stewart and Shelby Novak.
Knoch won against West Mifflin with a shutout pitching performance from Marlee Fraser. Boys lacrosse
Hempfield won against Franklin Regional in a nonsection match. Girls lacrosse
Moon beat Quaker Valley in a Section 2-2A game with standout performances from Allyssa Anstis and Seanna Rodriguez.
Section 4-3A – The top seeds advanced to Thursday’s section finals but not without a fight. Devin Collier won against Avi Sharma, and Ari Plutko secured a victory over teammate Ronan Gibbons.

The top player Landon Harclerode from Valley only lost two games in two matches on his way to the section singles finals. He will face Aydan Gross of Mt. Pleasant in the finals on Thursday. Harclerode won against Gabe Nettleton of Indiana in the semifinals, 6-1, 6-0. Gross defeated Silas Morris of Greensburg Salem, 6-2, 7-5, to reach the finals.
