Carnegie is looking to improve its parks and upgrade the technology used by its police force

Carnegie Borough plans to upgrade its parks and improve the technology used by its police department.

Carnegie Borough has received a $178,786 grant from the state’s Commission on Crime and Delinquency to enhance the technology and wellness of its police department.

The grant will be used to purchase more police technology, including record management system licenses, portable laptops, body-worn cameras, surveillance cameras, patrol car dash cameras, and automated license plate readers.

The police department currently has four record management system licenses, and the grant will allow the purchase of two more to enable simultaneous login access for all six computers.

The police started using body-worn cameras in 2021 with previous funding. The additional cameras will further improve public safety and efficiency, according to Underwood.

Car dash cameras capture everything that happens in front of a patrol car, while automated license plate readers help identify stolen vehicles or those involved in criminal activities.

The grant also covers the installation of more surveillance cameras around the municipal building and an officer wellness program with onsite fitness equipment.

Park improvements

The borough applied for a greenways, trails, and recreation program from the state’s department of community and economic development.

Although the borough was not initially granted the funding, officials are reapplying due to the project's importance.

The grant application seeks $263,037 in funding.

The goal is to enhance playgrounds to provide equal play opportunities for all children, including those with disabilities. This involves improvements to the Carnegie Municipal Park playground and replacement of Irishtown Tot Playground.

The project aims to include inclusive equipment, ground-level play opportunities, multisensory elements, surface replacement, and quiet spaces for overwhelmed or anxious children based on stakeholder input.

Proposed additions at Carnegie Municipal Park’s playground include new swings and built-in seats.

Rehabilitation at the Irishtown Park Playground includes a whirl playground spinner, motor bridge and tunnel, a swing set, a teeter-totter, built-in seats, and an ADA ground cover.

Both playgrounds will see various improvements, including the addition of communication and music boards, activity panels, a braille clock, a lending library, and benches.
