A skier has died in an avalanche that was triggered last week near the B.C.-Alberta border in Yoho National Park.

According to Avalanche Canada, the avalanche is thought to have been started on Friday when the lone skier was on Cathedral Mountain, which is about a 40-minute drive east of Field, B.C.

“A solo skier skied off the shoulder of Cathedral Mountain, onto a slope known as Cathedral Glades,” read the Avalanche Canada incident report.

“The skier triggered a size 2.5 avalanche … The victim was not reported missing until late in the day on April 1.”

Searchers searched the mountain by air and were able to find a ski sticking out from the snow. Once on the mountain, crews found the victim “partially buried, with a boot also visible on the snow surface. A transceiver was found switched off in the victim’s backpack.”

The skier has not been identified.
