No tsunami threat to British Columbia after earthquake in Taiwan, officials state

There seems to be no tsunami risk to the Pacific coastal areas of North America after a powerful earthquake in Taiwan.

The U.S. National Tsunami Warning Center states that there is no expected tsunami in B.C., Alaska, California, Oregon, or Washington state.

Buildings in Taiwan were damaged after a quake occurred during the morning rush on Wednesday, with a small tsunami reaching southern Japanese islands.

Japan reported no damage or injuries, but residents in the Okinawa region were advised to stay on safe ground until tsunami advisories were lifted.

Taiwan’s earthquake monitoring agency reported the magnitude as 7.2, while the U.S. Geological Survey estimated it at 7.4.

There is no immediate information on casualties.
