King Charles expressed warm wishes for BBC reporter Nicholas Witchell, whom he famously labeled as “an awful man” nearly twenty years ago.

This act was captured in a video at Witchell’s retirement party, as reported by Deadline, following the journalist’s notable 48-year tenure with the broadcaster. The message, delivered and played at the event, featured the King jokingly referring to the pair’s “ups and downs” over the years.

In 2005, Charles, then Prince of Wales, was overheard expressing his dislike for Witchell during a ski trip with his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry. After Witchell had asked some questions, Charles responded: “Bloody people. I can’t bear that man. I mean he is so awful, he really is.”

The King, who recently returned to public life while undergoing ongoing cancer treatment, displayed a more lighthearted side with his jest at the retirement celebration. Recently, the King assumed patronage of Witchell’s Normandy Memorial Trust, which aims to create a permanent D-Day memorial.
