Cameron Sutton, who used to play for the Pittsburgh Steelers, turned himself in to the police in Florida on Sunday night due to allegations of domestic violence, as reported by the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.
At 8:30 p.m., Sutton surrendered at the Orient Road Jail in Tampa, Fla, facing a charge of domestic battery by strangulation, which is a third-degree felony.
Last week, authorities in Florida were looking for information on the whereabouts of Sutton, who is 29 years old, after a warrant was issued for his arrest. Sutton’s lawyer got in touch with the authorities on March 25 to inform them that he would surrender, but he did not do so until Sunday, the police stated.
Sheriff Chad Chronister mentioned in a statement, “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County.”
The charge is related to an incident of domestic violence that apparently involved Sutton and a woman at about 5 a.m. on March 7, law enforcement informed the Detroit Free Press according to the Associated Press.
It’s not clear whether Sutton was released or taken into custody at the jail.
He started 31 games for the Steelers during the 2021 and 2022 seasons, making five interceptions and 95 tackles. He was drafted by the team in the third round in 2017.
The Detroit Lions signed Sutton to a three-year, $33 million contract, which included a $10.9 million signing bonus and $21 million fully guaranteed.
During his single year in Detroit, Sutton had a total of 65 tackles and one interception during the Lions’ season, which ended in the NFC Championship Game. He was let go by the team after the arrest warrant against him was announced.
