Kia is recalling over 427,000 Telluride SUVs because there is a problem that could make the cars roll away when they're not supposed to.

According to papers released by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, some 2020-2024 Tellurides might not completely engage their intermediate shaft and right front driveshaft. This could eventually cause the cars to move unintentionally while parked, increasing the chance of a crash.

Earlier this month, Kia America chose to recall all 2020-2023 model year and certain 2024 model year Tellurides, with no reported injuries or accidents at the time.

The problem with shaft engagement is believed to result from incorrect assembly. The recall involves 2020-2024 Tellurides made between January 9, 2019, and October 19, 2023, with an estimated 1% having the issue.

To fix this, dealers will update the electronic parking brake software for the affected cars and replace any damaged intermediate shafts for free. Owners who have already paid for repairs will be reimbursed.

Meanwhile, owners of the affected Tellurides are advised to manually apply the emergency brake before leaving the vehicle. They can also check if their particular vehicle is part of the recall and get more details from the NHTSA site and/or Kia’s recall lookup platform.

Letters informing owners will be sent out on May 15, with dealer notification starting a few days earlier.

The Associated Press contacted Kia America in Irvine, California, for further comment on Sunday.
