An 89-year-old Holocaust survivor was heckled by pro-Palestinian protestors during a Berkeley City Council meeting this week. She was advocating for the council to pass a resolution supporting Holocaust Remembrance Day.
The Jewish Community Relations Council shared videos from the meeting on social media. These clips quickly gained popularity, capturing the moment when the meeting had to be paused due to Susanne DeWitt being shouted down.
The Jewish Chronicle reported reported on the chaotic meeting Thursday. They described pro-Palestine demonstrators harassing council members and Israel supporters, using derogatory terms such as ‘Zionist pigs’, ‘genocide enablers’, ‘murderers’ and ‘money suckers’.
During the meeting, DeWitt, a Holocaust survivor from Germany, was interrupted and heckled. She pleaded with the Berkeley City Council to pass a proclamation for Holocaust Remembrance Day, highlighting the current rise in antisemitism. She began speaking about the invasion by Hamas and the protestor interjected, shouting “Time!”
After being allowed to finish by the councilman running the meeting, DeWitt continued by saying that Hamas’s attack resulted in the “murder of 1200 Israelis and the brutal torture and rape of women.”
Protestors shouted “Lies!” and the meeting descended into chaos, prompting the councilman to call for a break.
