Fox Families Care is starting spring with the aim of assisting more families in the Fox Chapel Area School District.
The organization is holding its second yearly fundraiser at the Fox Chapel Golf Club, featuring dancing, food, and lively drinks.
Nicole Shirk, the Executive Director, described it as a fun evening for everyone to socialize, raise funds, and increase awareness to support the community.
Established in 2019, Fox Families Care works to demonstrate to disadvantaged children that the community supports them, as mentioned by President Paulette O’Donnell.
She emphasized that all children should be treated equally regardless of their financial situation and that they want to inspire them to succeed.
Their aim is to provide them with encouragement to excel.
The event is scheduled for April 12, from 7 to 10 p.m., with a VIP reception starting at 6 p.m. The dress code is cocktail attire, and there will be dinner stations and live and silent auctions.
The funds raised will help to fulfill the group’s mission of connecting the needs of children and families with the available resources.
In 2023, the needs increased significantly.
According to Shirk, there were more families served, and the requests for emergency assistance grants were almost twice as many as in 2022.
She mentioned a three-fold increase in requests for Thanksgiving dinner gift cards, and a 34% growth in holiday gift requests that were fulfilled.
They are dedicated to never turning away families facing difficult times.
In 2023, Fox Families Care provided over 600 holiday gifts, 375 winter coats, more than 800 bedding items, and close to 400 back-to-school backpacks to children in need.
The group also offered about 180 scholarships for experiences at Camp Guyasuta and other summer activities, as well as 35 scholarships for extracurriculars.
O’Donnell praised donors for their support during last year's inaugural Swing Into Spring fundraising event.
Members collaborate with school staff to connect community members in need with resources while respecting confidentiality and dignity.
O’Donnell, one of the group’s co-founders, described the swift action taken once the economic disparities in the Fox Chapel Area School District became apparent, highlighting that 30% of families in the district are disadvantaged.
She mentioned that she and a few friends have been raising money continuously to assist those at risk.
