Sandspit Airport on Haida Gwaii has been given a new name, K’il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay

It’s the first Transport Canada airport to be renamed to an Indigenous name

The Sandspit Airport on Haida Gwaii has been renamed K’il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay, which means “Sandspit flying place,” and this change was announced on March 27.

Vance Badawey, who is the Federal Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Transport, was present in Sandspit for the announcement on March 27. This made the airport the first Transport Canada airport to be given an Indigenous name.

President of the Council of the Haida Nation, Gaagwiis (Jason Alsop), stated in a news release that the renaming of Sandspit Airport to K’il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay is an important part of the collaboration between Canada and the Haida Nation.

Taking part in efforts like this promotes trust and respect, which are crucial elements in renewing Canada's vision as a nation that includes everyone.

The renaming of the airport follows the official renaming of the area from Queen Charlotte Islands to Haida Gwaii in 2010, as well as the renaming of the Village of Queen Charlotte to the Village of Daajing Giids by the province.

In a news release, Minister of Transport Pablo Rodriguez expressed that languages carry the stories, cultures, and traditions of past generations, and they inspire future generations. He sees the renaming of the airport as a positive step in protecting and strengthening Indigenous languages and culture across Canada.

K’il Kun Xidgwangs Daanaay is one of the two airports on the island, with the other one located in Masset.
