In high school sports news for March 28, 2024: A freshman hit a home run in his first turn at bat to help North Allegheny defeat Norwin

Freshman J.J. Mancuso homered in his first varsity at-bat, hitting a two-run shot to lead North Allegheny to a 5-4 victory over Norwin in nonsection baseball Thursday.

August Maslo brought in two runs and J.D. Costanzo got the win for the Tigers (3-0). Keegan Carr brought in two runs for the Knights (2-1).

Avella won 2-1 against West Greene – Isaiah Bradick got 2 hits in 3 at-bats with an RBI and also won as the pitcher, and Brian Martos got a single, double, RBI, and saved the game for Avella (3-0) in a nonsection victory. Morgan Kiger and Darren Knight got doubles for West Greene (0-2).

Baldwin beat Gateway 12-1 – Trey Alario hit a home run and got 4 RBIs, Matt Nowicki brought in three runs, Adam Ledbetter got a triple and brought in two runs, and James Naret and Evan Golvash each got an RBI as Baldwin (1-3) easily won a nonsection game. Grady Dunsmore brought in the only run for Gateway (0-4).

Beaver defeated Freedom 15-0 – Maddox Tanner got a single and a double, bringing in two runs to lead Beaver (2-2) to a nonsection victory over Freedom (2-3). Brady Mayo got a double and brought in two runs, and Ty Butler got two hits and two RBIs for the Bobcats.

Belle Vernon won 6-4 against California – Cole Matusik got a two-run double, Connor Bergman brought in two runs, and Austin Hoffman got a double for Belle Vernon (3-1) after surviving a three-run, seventh-inning rally by California (2-3) in a nonsection win. Kris Weston got a triple, double, and RBI for the Trojans.

Burrell won 10-8 against Valley – Dylan McKallip hit a two-run single in the eighth inning to give Burrell (1-2, 1-1) a Section 3-3A win. Ryan Bates and Mike McKay each got two hits and two RBIs for the Bucs. Nikolas Heakins brought in two runs and Jacob Staraniec got a double and RBI for Valley (3-2, 1-1).

Carlynton won 17-10 against Monessen – Eric Firle and Sean Hart each got a double and brought in two runs, and Mason Mulligan went 3 for 5 with two RBIs to lead Carlynton (4-1, 2-0) in a high-scoring Section 2-A game. Eli Covington got two doubles, a triple, and brought in two runs, and R.J. DiEugenio got a triple and two RBIs for Monessen (0-4, 0-2).

Carmichaels won 10-1 against Jefferson-Morgan – Aydan Adamson and Colin Andrews each got a double and brought in two runs, Dominic Colarusso hit an RBI double, and Mason Lapana got three RBIs in a Section 1-A win for Carmichaels (3-0, 2-0). Deakyn Dehoet and Jaymison Robinson each got a double for Jefferson-Morgan (2-2, 0-2).

Central Valley won 8-3 against Neshannock – Winning pitcher Zachary McLean struck out 10, Nathan Angelo and Jadon Balewski each got two RBIs, and Jacob Hunter got a double and an RBI for Central Valley (1-3) in nonsection play. Dom Cubellis got a double and brought in a run for Neshannock (1-2).

Connellsville won 17-2 against Albert Gallatin – Ethan Shultz hit a home run and brought in four runs, Grayden Gillott went 3 for 5 with two RBIs, and Jake Lee and Kace Shearer each got a double and brought in a run for Connellsville (2-3) in a nonsection win. Cyrus Potkul hit a solo home run for Albert Gallatin (0-3).

East Allegheny won 4-0 against Jeannette – Ryan Rupert batted in two runs and Joe Connors and Traynor Janosko each hit doubles and batted in a run for East Allegheny (3-0) in a nonsection shutout win. Amari Thomas got 2 hits in 3 at-bats for Jeannette (2-1).

Elizabeth Forward 7, Peters Township 6 – Aidan Grimes received a walk with the bases full in the bottom of the seventh to score the winning run as Elizabeth Forward (3-0) won a nonsection game. Winning pitcher Jacob Peterson got three hits for the Warriors. Michael Alspaugh hit a home run and Reese Clarke singled, doubled and batted in a run for Peters Township (2-3).

Fort Cherry 7, Chartiers-Houston 5 – Matt Sieg hit a home run and brought in three runs and Ryan Huey hit a solo home run for Fort Cherry (2-0) in a nonsection win. Luke Camden hit a double and batted in a run for Chartiers-Houston (0-3). Blake Sweder got the win and Sieg secured the save for the Rangers.

Frazier 6, Mapletown 2 – Aiden Hardy batted in two runs, Tyler Monack doubled and batted in another, and Chase Smith got the win for Frazier (2-1) in nonsection play. A.J. Vanata hit two doubles and batted in a run for Mapletown (1-4).

Hempfield 9, Latrobe 6 – Caden Biondi and Parker Donsen each hit doubles and batted in a run while Ethan Minerva, Max Short and Colin Polechko also had RBIs to lead Hempfield (4-0) to a nonsection win. Mason Leonard batted in two runs and Luke Nipar-Smith hit a double and added an RBI for Latrobe (3-1).

Highlands 11, Laurel Highlands 6 – Winning pitcher Luke Bombalski hit a home run and batted in three runs and Carson McGraw, Boyd Brown and Sal Barbarino batted in two runs apiece for Highlands (1-3) in a nonsection win. Shane Layton hit a double and batted in a run for Laurel Highlands (0-3).

Indiana 8, DuBois 7 – Trevor Smith hit a walk-off two-run single as Indiana (2-1) rallied for five runs in the seventh to beat DuBois in nonsection action. Andrew McGee got 3 hits in 4 at-bats with a double and Tristan Redinger was 2 for 2 with a double for the Little Indians. Trey Wingard got 3 hits in 4 at-bats for DuBois.

Kiski Area 12, Hopewell 3 – Jake Smith hit a home run, tripled and batted in three runs, Blake Fritz hit two doubles and finished with two RBIs, and Jonathan Walker got the win for Kiski Area (3-1) in nonsection play against Hopewell (3-2).

Laurel 18, South Side 9 – Kolton Carlson got 4 hits in 5 at-bats with a home run and five RBIs, Tyler Shearer batted in three runs, Hunter Kobialka batted in a pair, and Luca Santini got 3 hits in 6 at-bats with an RBI as Laurel (2-0, 2-0) doubled up South Side (1-2, 0-2) in Section 2-2A. Jake Zeigler batted in three RBIs and Casey Lewis and Carter Wilson each hit a double and batted in two runs for the Rams.

Mars 6, Butler 5 – Down 5-4 in the bottom of the seventh, Jacob Maple hit a two-run walk-off single to lift Mars (2-0) over Butler (2-1) in nonsection play. Boden Lenyk got 2 hits in 4 at-bats with three RBIs and Noah Collins hit a double for the Golden Tornado. Grady Speigle got the win for the Fightin’ Planets.

Mohawk 6, Quaker Valley 3 – Keigan Hopper hit a three-run double, Jay Wrona hit a double and batted in two, and Vinny Pezzuolo batted in a run for Mohawk (2-1, 2-0) in a Section 1-3A win over Quaker Valley (1-3, 0-2). Jasper Gray got two RBIs for the Quakers.

Montour 12, Eden Christian 2 – Michael Ivanoff performed well, getting 3 hits in 4 at-bats including a triple, and brought in 3 runs. Joshua Peremba and Jake Robinson each hit a double for Montour (3-1) in a nonsection victory. Josh Tilden drove in a run for Eden Christian (3-1).

Morgantown (WV) 7, Uniontown 4 – Samuel Watson hit a triple and brought in 3 runs, and Koa Silvers hit a double and drove in a run as Morgantown defeated Uniontown (1-2) in nonsection action. Brayden Hinzy, Tyler Gasper, and Tate Musko each hit a double for the Red Raiders.

Mt. Pleasant 11, Ringgold 5 – Cole Chatfield went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and Dane Firmstone also brought in 2 runs to help Mt. Pleasant (2-3) win a nonsection match. Alex Kolano had 3 hits for Ringgold (2-2).

Pine-Richland 9, Canon-McMillan 4 – Benjamin Husted brought in 3 RBIs and Peyton Ford hit 2 doubles and brought in a run for Pine-Richland (4-1) in a nonsection victory. Will Taczak and Sam Meredith each achieved 2 hits for Canon-Mac (0-2).

Poland Seminary (OH) 5, New Castle 0 – Winning pitcher Jacob Hayes contributed to the offense with a single and an RBI to lead Poland Seminary (Ohio). Dominic Miller had the only hit for New Castle (0-4).

Riverside 12, Ellwood City 2 – Christian Lucarelli hit a home run and brought in 4 runs, Darre McDade hit a two-run home run, and Bo Fornataro drove in 2 runs to lead Riverside (3-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-3A win. Zack Hare struck out 12 for the Panthers. Joe Roth brought in a couple of runs for Ellwood City (2-2, 0-2).

Riverview 2, Brentwood 1 – Jack Loughren hit a walk-off single and finished the day 3 for 4 to lift Riverview (4-0, 2-0) past Brentwood (1-2, 0-2) in Section 3-2A. Johnny Bertucci hit a double and brought in a run for the Raiders. Zach Wuenschell hit a double for the Spartans.

Seneca Valley 7, Plum 2 – Mike Delduca hit a triple and Nick Parrotto got the win as Seneca Valley (1-1) beat Plum (4-2) in nonsection play. Jack Anderson hit a triple and Dom Beyer hit a double for the Mustangs.

Shady Side Academy 4, Deer Lakes 3 – Jonah Sackrowitz hit the game-winning single in the eighth inning while Caden Green and winning pitcher David Dillon each hit a double and brought in a run as Shady Side Academy (2-0, 2-0) edged Deer Lakes (2-2, 0-2) in Section 3-3A. Anthony Smith brought in a run for the Lancers.

Shenango 16, Beaver Falls 1 – Tyler Houk got 3 hits in 3 at-bats and brought in 5 RBIs, Christian Anterock brought in 3, and Jimmy Roe brought in 2 as Shenango (3-1, 2-0) rolled to a Section 1-3A win. Christian Petronick had a base hit for Beaver Falls (0-2, 0-2).

Steel Valley 14, McKeesport 3 – Winner Cooper Phares struck out 9, Logan Thomas hit a double and brought in 4, and Eli Brugos brought in 3 RBIs as Steel Valley (1-2) beat McKeesport (0-2) in nonsection play. Brady Boyle was 2 for 2 for the Tigers.

Washington 12, Bentworth 9 – William Callan got 2 hits in 3 at-bats and brought in 3 RBIs and also got the save, and winner Ian Callan hit a double as Washington (3-1, 2-0) defeated Bentworth (0-3, 0-2) in Section 1-2A. Lucas Burt brought in a couple of runs for the Bearcats.

Waynesburg 10, Beth-Center 0 – Kory Taylor, Tyler Groves, and Derek Turcheck each brought in 2 runs, Ethan Kiger hit a double, and Austin Surber hit a triple as Waynesburg (3-0) shut out Beth-Center (3-3) in nonsection play. Luke Amon had the only hit for the Bulldogs.

West Shamokin 11, Leechburg 0 – The player Max Long hit a two-run double and Jude Olinger hit a double and brought in a run to help West Shamokin win a game that wasn't in their usual section. Jayden Floyd made one hit in three attempts for Leechburg (1-1).

Yough 13, Brownsville 3 – Nate Bell got two hits in two attempts, including a triple, and brought in three runs to help Yough (2-3, 2-0) beat Brownsville (0-2, 0-2) in their Section 4-3A game. John Steban made a single hit and a double, and brought in three runs for the Cougars.

Softball

Avella 11, Cornell 2 – Ginny Smith and Taylor Shirley each hit a double and brought in two runs, and Avery Rado hit a home run for Avella (3-1) in a nonsection win. McKenna Griffith hit a triple and Kathleen Wegley hit a double for Cornell (0-1).

Belle Vernon 5, Connellsville 0 – Katie Sokol hit a two-run homer and Taylor Beech and Mailey Hayes each hit a double to help Belle Vernon (4-0) win a game that wasn't in their usual section against Connellsville (4-2).

Bentworth 15, Washington 0 – Sydney Gonglik pitched a no-hitter for four innings, striking out 12, to help Bentworth (3-2, 1-0) win a game in Section 3-2A against Washington (0-2, 0-1). Willow Eckels hit a double and brought in three runs, and Zoie McDonald brought in four runs for the Bearcats.

Burgettstown 12, Fort Cherry 1 – Layla Sherman went 3 for 3, hitting a double and a home run and bringing in four runs, and Brooklyn Robinson and Madelina Guiddy each hit a double for Burgettstown (2-2, 1-1) in a Section 3-2A win. Mylee Johnson made one hit for Fort Cherry (0-2, 0-1).

Canon-McMillan 11, Mt. Lebanon 1 – Olivia Ford got four hits in four attempts, including two doubles, and brought in four runs, and Kiersten Williams hit a home run for Canon-McMillan (1-1, 1-1) in a Section 1-6A win. Delaney Ritenour hit a home run for Mt. Lebanon (0-4, 0-2).

Central Valley 4, Shenango 3 – Emma Weaver got three hits in three attempts, including a double, and brought in two runs to help Central Valley (2-0) win a game that wasn't in their usual section. Zoe Offie hit a triple and Emma Herb hit a double for Shenango (0-3).

Deer Lakes 3, Laurel 1 –Tia Germanich hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth, and the player Maddie Kee struck out 15 to help Deer Lakes (3-1) win a game that wasn't in their usual section. Siena Plummer hit a triple for the Lancers. Macey Miller hit a double for the Spartans (1-2).

Elizabeth Forward 15, Laurel Highlands 0 – Alivia Grimm, Hannah Evans and Shelby Telegdy each hit a double, and Julia Resnik hit a triple for Elizabeth Forward (3-0, 1-0) in a Section 2-4A win. Kayla Howell made one hit for Laurel Highlands (0-2, 0-1).

Ellwood City 19, Riverside 4 – Keira Rozanski made a single hit, hit a home run and brought in four runs, and Sara Schwartz hit two doubles for Ellwood City (4-0) in a nonsection win. Dakota Hicks made a single hit and a triple, and Kaylee Palombi also hit a triple for the Wolverines. Mia Williams made one hit, brought in a run and scored twice for Riverside (0-1).

Franklin Regional 10, Mars 9 – CC Copeland hit the game-winning single in the seventh for Franklin Regional (3-3) in a nonsection victory. Allie Walukiewicz hit a triple, and Steph Esswein and Laura Craska each hit a double for Mars (1-5). Toryn Fulton hit a double and a triple, and Ciara Camacho made a single hit and a triple for the Panthers.

Freeport 5, Indiana 3 – The player Sydney Selker struck out 11 and got three hits in four attempts, including a home run, and Lauren Clark hit a double to help Freeport (3-1) win a game that wasn't in their usual section. Julia Antonucci made one hit and brought in a run for Indiana (2-3).

Greensburg Salem 5, Derry 2 – Gionnah Ruffner hit a double, a home run and had four RBIs while Alle Scarpa struck out 14 batters for Greensburg Salem (2-3) in a nonsection win. Sophia Doherty and Francesca DePalma hit a double each for Derry (1-3).

Jeannette 10, Springdale 0 – Grace Stein pitched a five-inning game without allowing a hit and struck out 11 batters, leading Jeannette (2-0, 1-0) to a Section 3-A win over Springdale (0-1, 0-1). Mia Sarpolis hit a triple and Abigail Shaw hit a double for the Jayhawks.

Knoch 3, Kiski Area 0 – Marlee Fraser struck out 10 batters to lead Knoch (2-2) to a nonsection win. Hannah Hill and Alyssa Perona each got a single for Kiski Area (0-4).

McGuffey 20, Mapletown 2 – Mia Couture hit a double and a home run, while Katie Grimm and Mackenzie Shrader also hit home runs for McGuffey (2-2) in a nonsection win over Mapletown (2-1). Sidney Dobrzynski hit two doubles, and Faith Ealy and Julia Barr each hit a double for the Highlanders.

Mohawk 7, Mercer 4 – Addy Moskal hit a double and Gianna Pezzuolo had two RBIs, leading Mohawk (3-0) to a nonsection win over Mercer.

Mt. Pleasant 15, Gateway 0 – Ally Jones went 4 for 4 with seven RBIs and Dani Trainer doubled for Mt. Pleasant (3-2) in a nonsection win. Gianna D’Agostino singled for Gateway (0-4).

Seneca Valley 4, Pine-Richland 1 – The winning pitcher Lexie Hames struck out 14 batters and hit a two-run homer, while Kylie Staudt and Addie Winkle hit a double each to lead Seneca Valley (5-0, 2-0) to a Section 1-6A win. Izzy Sulesky singled and drove in a run for Pine-Richland (2-3, 1-1).

Shaler 10, Bethel Park 0 – Bria Bosijevac hit a home run and pitched a five inning game without allowing a hit with 10 strikeouts, leading Shaler (3-0) to a nonsection win over Bethel Park (2-3). Jayla Antomachi and Taylor London also hit home runs for the Titans.

South Park 8, Upper St. Clair 2 – Jacie Hilligsburg hit a double, and Sydney Sekely and Reese Katich had two hits each for South Park (2-1) in a nonsection win. Rachel Scharrer hit a home run for Upper St. Clair (2-3).

Thomas Jefferson 12, Chartiers-Houston 3 – Emma DeSimone had three RBIs and Liv Stock, Morgan Alisesky and Aubrey Shaffer drove in two runs each to lead Thomas Jefferson (2-2) to a nonsection win. Lauren Rush hit a home run for Chartiers-Houston (2-1).

West Mifflin 12, Uniontown 3 – Mia Bey went 2 for 3 with two home runs and four RBIs, and Aubrey Jaskulski hit two doubles to lead West Mifflin (3-2) to a nonsection win. Graci Rodeheaver and Lauren White each hit a double for Uniontown (0-2).

Boys volleyball

Hempfield 3, Latrobe 1 – Drew Gordon had 14 kills, leading Hempfield to a nonsection win over Latrobe. Josh Reilly added nine kills, and Dom Palmiero and Gunner Wheaton each had five blocks.

Moon 3, Trinity 1 – Logan Anderson-Stewart had seven aces and 31 assists, Casey Sunday had 11 kills and 11 digs, and Charlie Basil followed with 10 kills as Moon (2-1) beat Trinity (2-3) in nonsection play.

Girls lacrosse

Plum 17, Baldwin 2 – Ella Pedley scored four goals and Sophie Anderson, Bella DiFrancesca and Rayla Smith each had three goals to lead Plum to a nonsection win.
